CASI RESEARCH SEMINAR: “Post-Soviet Central Eurasia’s New Religious Landscapes: A View from Tatarstan”
SPEAKER: Matthew Derrick, Humboldt State University
Abstract: Religion has emerged as a powerful social and political force in the post-Soviet space, particularly in the independent states of Central Asia and the Muslim-majority autonomous regions of the Russian Federation. This talk examines the so-called religious revival among Muslims of post-Soviet Tatarstan, Russia, showing how changing political-territorial circumstances over the past quarter century have impacted the meaning and social expression of Islam in that region.

New online tutoring sessions by WARC
Starting from this Fall, the WARC has started to offer online tutoring sessions!  As the first learning support center in the Bard-HESP network and the country of Kyrgyzstan to offer such a service, the WARC is excited to tell us more about the online tutoring program.

Joint ESCAS-CESS Conference
The European Society for Central Asian Studies (ESCAS) and the Central Eurasian Studies Society (CESS) held the Joint ESCAS-CESS Conference at the American University of Central Asia (AUCA) in Bishkek, June 29-July 2, 2017.  This was the 15th Biennial Conference of ESCAS, and the Sixth Regional Conference of CESS. The conference was hosted by AUCA’s Central Asian Studies Institute (CASI).

The Falling Walls Lab Bishkek
The first Falling Walls Lab Bishkek takes place at the American University of Central Asia. Bachelor and Master students, postdocs, young professionals, entrepreneurs and junior professors from six universities of Bishkek and Naryn will take part in a cutting edge science slam competition, presenting their research projects, initiatives or ideas in just three minutes. Three AUCA students are among the participants.

Results of the Photo contest “Migrants: An Invisible Force in Central Asia”
There results of the photo contest "Migrants: Invisible Force in Central Asia" were summarized at the American University of Central Asia (AUCA) in a solemn atmosphere on the eve of 26 September 2017. The competition was held in two categories - among professional photographers and among students throughout the region.
Both winners in the student category are from Kyrgyzstan: 1st winner - Almazbek Duishebaev, AUCA student; 2nd winner - Rakhat Sagynbek kyzy, student of the Kyrgyz State Medical Academy.
