CASI is holding a follow-on workshop this year to the seminar it conducted in 2014 on the “Intersections of History and Literature in Central Asia.” The workshop will be held on the campus of AUCA in Bishkek from 30 November to 2 December 2017.

Literature Week is a part of CASI’s Workshop on Literature and History. Supported by a generous contribution from Matthew Nimetz, the aim of the workshop is to create a community of junior scholars and advanced graduate students committed to studying literature and to applying literary tools and methodologies to the study of literary art in the Central Asian past.

Recognizing the growing need for online research, digital citizenship, and 21st-century skill development, AUCA’s Writing and Academic Resource Center (WARC) has launched a joint initiative with AUCA Library with the help of an AMICAL grant.

On Wednesday, November 1st, the American University of Central Asia’s Writing and Academic Resource Center (WARC) celebrated its sixth year of providing tutoring services to the students of AUCA.

Abstract: This presentation explores the perception of public art in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan through the lenses of collective memory, nationalism, and sociology. Using both Pierre Nora’s concepts of lieux de memoire (places of memory) and Lefebvre’s ideas of the subjective construction of space, I investigate pieces of public art in Bishkek as evocative of history and memory, as dynamic sites in which memory practices occur, elucidating the various relationships denizens of Bishkek have to pieces of art with varying historical symbols. 

We encourage applicants to submit a full panel proposal, as only a small number of individual papers will be selected. We will consider proposals for panels and roundtables that have a thematic focus, are of a comparative character, and involve scholars or practitioners affiliated with different institutions.

AUCA new faculty member - Anastasia Valeeva is data journalism lecturer and open data researcher. She has researched the use of open data in investigative data journalism as part of her fellowship at the Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism, Oxford.

Dear faculty and students, for the upcoming 6th Asian Borderlands conference in AUCA (Bishkek), we invite panels and papers that address the following questions: How are borderlands in Asia creating alternative spaces for heritages, self-definition and the extraction of resources? How can these cases serve to rethink social theories of various kind? We look forward to receiving proposals before 25 October 2017.

Every year, AUCA holds elections to the Student Senate, membership in which is considered prestigious among university students. This year, Student Senate Elections 2017 will take place on November 3.
