European Studies
Europe is a global political and economic center that exerts enormous international influence. Few areas in the world are as fascinating and complex as Europe - whether you consider the politics or the economics, the art or the architecture, the literature or the archaeology, the sociology or the anthropology of the continent. Europe is both the home of ancient civilizations and cultures and one of the world’s most dynamic economic and financial centers. Its political institutions increasingly serve as models for the rest of the world.
The European Studies department is a small but fascinating program. ES is in process of development. Professors use modern technologies (e-course and e-reserve system, critical thinking and hermeneutic methods, organize interactive lessons); elaborate new courses with goal to successful and effective representation of the European aspects in the modern process; conduct active research work in the fields of philosophy, history, politics, linguistics and culture; participate in conferences, seminars, and trainings to develop their research and teaching skills; involve students in research work; organize club’s activity; realize educational and advising tasks for the foundation of future graduates’ career; actively participate in University life. American University’s European Studies program encourages you to develop a broad perspective on Europe through four main subject categories: history and politics; culture and society. By taking European Studies you will look at the forces which have molded Europe and which will influence its, and your, future.
The aim of the European Studies program is to prepare university graduates for careers in supranational organizations or in national organizations that are active internationally, especially in Europe. Such organizations may be:
- Professional and industry associations
- Public institutions, administrative bodies
- European agencies
- NGOs
- Numerous projects based on EU funds in their respective countries.
For positions in these organizations, applicants must have the ability to communicate effectively with speakers of other languages and other cultural backgrounds and must have profound knowledge of organizational structures and of the background, structure and future perspectives of European integration.
The graduates of the program will be fluent in two European languages to communicate effectively with speakers of other languages and other cultural backgrounds. Moreover, they will have profound knowledge of organizational structures and of the background, structure and future perspectives of European integration.The program is unique as it is the only program in Central Asia which offers a major in European Studies.
All required courses are taught in English. In addition, our students learn French and German. This shall provide our students with bilingual perspective onEurope. Overall, the study of European Studies comprises nine major units: European History, European Politics, European Economics, European Geography, European Culture, European Literature, European Society, European Law and European Languages (German and French).
