Usmon is a PhD candidate at the Department for the Study of Religion and the Center for Diaspora and Transnational Studies, University of Toronto. He previously recieved an MA in Middle Eastern Studies from Lund University, Sweden. His dissertation research explores anthropologically senses of religious ambivalence, doubt, and failure, in post-Soviet Kyrgyzstan. By focusing on these affects, he aims to shed light on the formation of Soviet secularity and the ways in which Soviet secular sensibilities and vocabularies unfold in post-Soviet Central Asia. Usmon’s primary academic interests include critical approaches to secularism and religion, as well as the anthropology of law and ethics.
