Dr. Sagynbek Orunbaev is an Associate Professor in the Applied Geology and Environmental Sustainability and Climate Science departments at the American University of Central Asia. He earned his Ph.D. from the Institute of Dynamic of the Geospheres, Russian Academy of Sciences (2018, Russia), a Master of Arts in Natural Disaster Risk Management in Urban Areas at the National Academic Institute for Policy Studies (2016, Japan), a specialized degree in Economics from Novosibirsk State University (2005, Russia), Master of Applied Mathematics from Kyrgyz State National University named after Jusup Balasagyn (2002, Kyrgyzstan), and a specialized degree in Applied Mathematics with honors from the Informatics and Applied Mathematics program at Kyrgyz State National University named after Jusup Balasagyn (2000, Kyrgyzstan).
Dr. Orunbaev joined AUCA in 2017 and has vast experience in geology, seismology, and environmental studies. He is the President of the Kyrgyz Association on the Safety and Large Dams - KyrCOLD (since 2019), a visiting scholar and Associate Professor of the Technical University of Berlin (2019, Germany), a senior researcher at the Research Institute of Seismic Construction at KSUSTA (since 2013), a seismologist engineer of the International Institute of Seismology and Earthquake Engineering (2014-2016, Japan), a researcher at the United Institute of Geology, Geophysics and Mineralogy of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences (2003-2007, Russia). Dr. Orunbaev has been an associate member of the Mountain Forum ICIMOD since 2008, a member of the Board of Management of the JICA Association since 2012, and a member of the Seismological Society of America since 2013.
