Akylai Muktarbek kyzy is the Director of the Master (M.Sc.) in Economics Program and an Assistant Professor both in the Economics department and Master of Arts in Talent Management and Human Potential Development in Organizations (TALENT) Program at the American University of Central Asia. She is a Ph.D. Candidate in Economics at the School of Economics and Business of the Norwegian University of Life Sciences (Norway). She earned her Master of Arts degree in Economics (diploma with merits) from Central European University (2012, Hungary) and her Bachelor of Arts in Economics (summa cum laude) from the American University of Central Asia (2010, Kyrgyzstan). 

Akylai joined AUCA in 2012 as an Instructor and was promoted to Assistant Professor and Director of the M.Sc. in Economics Program. In 2017, the Center for Environment and Development was launched at AUCA, and Akylai joined it as a Senior Researcher. Currently, she is the Interim Director of the Center for Environment and Development. She is a Teaching Fellow at the OSCE Academy. She was also an external researcher at the Center for Economic Research of the National Bank of the Kyrgyz Republic (2015-2016).
