The Tian Shan Policy Center, a think tank at the American University of the Central Asia (TSPC AUCA), is currently collecting information on experts from Central Asia (Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan), Russia and internationally, working on the different aspects of migration in Central Asia with the aim of developing an expert database.
This is part of the project “Building an Enabling Environment in the Kyrgyz Republic to Develop Effective Migration Policies: Promoting Capacity of Migration State Bodies and Promotion of Migration Studies in KR,” in collaboration with the State Migration Service of the Kyrgyz Republic.

CASI RESEARCH SEMINAR: "Negotiating Kyrgyz Nationhood: Of History Textbooks' and History Teachers' Attitudes towards the Soviet Past"

Abstract: In my dissertation I analysed representations of Soviet socialism in post-Soviet history textbooks and in the life stories of history teachers in Kyrgyzstan. I analysed, first, how the post-Soviet Kyrgyz state reconstructs its Soviet past on the level of official discourse, particularly in school history textbooks, and second, how history teachers – as professionals and private citizens – relate to the official discourse when making sense of the Soviet past.

Raisa Belyavina, PhD Candidate, Teachers College, Columbia University, CASI Visiting Scholar
Abstract:
To address the challenges of attracting new teachers to the profession and reducing highly overburdened teaching loads assigned to teachers, the Kyrgyz Republic implemented a new teacher salary structure in 2011, which eliminated the Soviet-era stavka system and replaced it with a workload system that is common around the world.
