Sociology Week: Interview with Baian Madybaev, sophomore

Sociology Week: Interview with Baian Madybaev, sophomore

April 19, 2013

-Tell us please, why did you choose AUCA? And why Sociology?

I chose AUCA because I really like the spirit of the University. I’ve heard a lot of stories from my elder friends who studied in AUCA about the university’s events such as Orientation Week, Spirit Week, Sport Competitions and others. Then when I’ve got interested in the University, I’ve visited the AUCA website and started reading many articles for students and future freshmen and I understood that AUCA is the only university that I want to study in. From school years I knew that I want to study people and society’s nature, it was very interesting for me. And when I’ve passed the admission tests, without any doubt I’ve chose the Sociology department.

- Tell us about your favorite classes from sociology, why do you like it?

It’s hard for me to choose only one of all classes that I took, because all of them are very different and interesting. But the most fascinating course was “Intro to Sociology”, because in this class our teachers really caught our interest in studying Sociology. We had different activities that have shown us what Sociology is in its nature.

-Did you participate in any projects, competitions or events from your department?

Yes, the last event that I’ve joined was Alternative Celebration of 8th of March. The main idea of this event is promotion of gender equality.  It provided the idea that in our society females are compared to objects of usage in some cases. It was a very interesting and helpful event for me as a man.

- What are you doing during your free time?

I have a lot of hobbies like football or other sports, but mainly I spend my free time in dance studio. Besides being just a dancer I am also a Dance Teacher and one of the heads of Let’s Dance Studio. There are about 150 students in our dance school at the moment, that’s why it also a very responsible hobby. Our studio was established in 2009, and from that time dancing became a very important part of my life. Also it is a good way to earn some money for my own expenses.

- How do you combine your study and work/dance competitions?

To be honest sometimes it is very hard, but possible. I try to be a good time manager and hard worker to do my best. Good time managing allows me to combine these two spheres. Knowledge that I get in sociology classes helps me very much in work that I do as a dance studio worker.

-Did you participate in any summer schools or trainings abroad?

For the moment I didn’t, but I look forward to visit many countries as a participant of summer school or some educational training.

-What did you get from your department?

Firstly, of course, my department gave me knowledge. But it is not the only thing that I’ve received. I appreciate all my professors very much, because each of them gives me a lot of helpful advices and life skills that force me to improve myself as a person, not only as a specialist.

- Who do you want to be after graduation? In what field are you going to work?

After my graduation I plan to pass Master’s degree program in other country. Every senior from sociology department has an opportunity to apply for Master’s abroad. And after graduation I want to come back to Kyrgyzstan and work in the sociological field. It might be a research company and after all I will open a social center. But I certainly want to work with people and society directly, not just filling some boring papers in a small office.

- All sociology students need to pass their internship as in other AUCA departments. What was your internship? What did you do? Was it interesting and helpful?

My internship was very interesting. I’ve passed it in “SIAR Research and Consulting”. It gave me really helpful professional skills. It was very interesting, because I get a lot of theoretical knowledge during my study, but internship showed me how to use it on practice.

-Your wishes and advises to future sociology students

If you will choose sociology as major, studying process is very interesting, but it is not going to be easy. But believe, it really worth it. All your hardworking will pay back to you with double return.
