National Security Language Initiative for Youth Summer Program 2023
August 15, 2023
The intensive summer program National Security Language Initiative for Youth, sponsored by the US Department of State, was successfully completed. The American University of Central Asia (AUCA) is thankful to be privileged in hosting NSLI-Y Program in Bishkek to support the study of the 18 U.S. high school students from June 24, 2023, through August 10, 2023.
Upon arrival, students received a three-day long orientation to learn about important facts about Kyrgyzstan, expected study activities, culture and security issues. This was an important event to manage expectations of the students, provide tools for adaptation and risk management. The U.S. high school students appreciated the induction into a new culture to help them have a successful cultural experience.
The next part of the program was full of academic learning and cultural exchange to expand students’ knowledge of the Russian language skills, learn more about Kyrgyz and Central Asian culture in Bishkek. All the students showed strong motivation, good study habits and great performance that helped them to progress their Russian language.
Moreover, students have successfully completed their individual sessions with the language partners. Through interacting with their language partners as well as participating in social events, students received a chance to start long-lasting friendships.
The NSLI-Y Program in Bishkek covered various cultural visits and activities that helped students to discover Kyrgyzstan and study in a highly interactive and welcoming environment. We appreciate the students for their incredible commitment that they have shown during the study program.
Our special thanks goes also to the US Department of State and the American Councils for International Education, as well as to program teachers, staff members, and host families who have helped to support our exchange students at school and home, giving up their time to ensure that students kept up with their new experience.
We look forward to further successful cooperation and welcome the students of the NSLI-Y summer program to AUCA!
