February 13, 2023

"AWAKE" Sociology Club invites you to an open lecture on the topic of "What is ‘toxic’ about masculinity and why does it concern everyone?".

About the lecture:

In modern societies, men and women's behavior is governed by a variety of alternative norms. These standards' content can differ across cultures, social classes, generations, and social groups. However, some masculine norms are known to be harmful to men and their closest associates. For instance, the so-called ‘toxic’ masculinity is accused of causing alcohol abuse, and domestic violence. In this lecture, we will talk about what it means to be a man, how masculine ideals affect men's lives, what are the consequences of such unwanted behavior in men, and how sociologists can help to improve the situation.

Maria Glukhova, Ph.D. candidate at European University at Saint Petersburg (Russia) is a sociologist who specializes in the sociology of health and illness, the sociology of emotions, and critical studies of men and masculinities. Her dissertation investigates the male experience of depression through the lens of generational analysis. She is also currently involved in a number of projects, including the study of sexuality in the third age, the sociological interpretation of dreams, and research on digital healthcare practices.

The lecture is going to be held on February 16th (4:30 - 6 pm) in room 410
