If you are interested in any of these questions, the Center for Civic Engagement (CCE) is inviting you to the public lecture and workshop led by two extraordinary scholars from the Institute for Public Life and Work (IPLW), USA - Dr. Harry Boyte and Marie Ström on November 20, 2022!

The "Building Flourishing Communities: Productive Citizenship" public talk and “Citizens as Co-Creators - Some Key Skills” workshop will introduce you to the topic of active and engaged citizenship, as well as equip you with the necessary skills in order to become one.

About the speakers:

Dr. Harry C. Boyte is the Senior Scholar in Public Work Philosophy at the Institute for Public Life and Work. He is a co-founder of the interdisciplinary (between disciplines) and transdisciplinary (beyond disciplines) field of Civic Studies, putting citizens at the center of democratic governance and democracy building. Boyte founded the Center for Democracy and Citizenship (CDC) at the University of Minnesota’s Humphrey School of Public Affairs and also the youth civic education initiative called Public Achievement, that has spread to dozens of communities and more than 20 countries including Poland, South Africa and Japan. In the 1960s, Boyte worked for Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr in the grassroots citizenship schools of the American civil rights movement. For more on this history, see the Podcast Listen, Organize, Act! Marie-Louise Ström is Co-Founder of the Institute for Public Life and Work and director of its education and training program. Originally from South Africa, for 20 years she directed the democracy education program at the Institute for Democracy in South Africa (Idasa), the major independent democracy-building organization in Africa. In 2001, as an international fellow at the Humphrey School of Public Affairs at the University of Minnesota, Ström became acquainted with the Public Work approach of the CDC which focuses on the central role of citizens in building and sustaining democracy. She adopted this approach in citizen leadership training programs across the continent of Africa, working with professionals from diverse backgrounds as well as grassroots leaders.
