AUCA students and schoolchildren planted 35 trees, 500 hedge seedlings and 1000 tulips in Elm Grove.

Lecturer of the department "Sociology" Zharkyn Shadymanova together with the AUCA Center for Civic Engagement, initiated a Green Day in Elm Grove. Schoolchildren from 3 metropolitan schools and volunteers from the educational center joined the event. In total, about 90 volunteers took part in planting and cleaning. The event took place on November 5th.

As part of the pilot course "Introduction to Sociology", teacher Zharkyn Shadymanova, together with students who study this course, purchased 20 pines, 10 apple trees, 5 willows, 500 hedge seedlings (ligustrum) and 1000 tulips for the Elm Grove Ecopark.

The purpose of the event is to plant trees and flowers, as they help reduce pollution and produce oxygen, and make our city greener and better.

And also to practically involve students - future social entrepreneurs and sociologists - in active civil social and environmental activities, where everything: was organized by the students themselves, learning along the way to implement social projects. The students developed an action plan and, breaking into groups, implemented it: one team purchased seedlings, flowers and tools for planting and harvesting, the other team developed a logo, came up with the name and slogan of the event, prepared a poster and posts for distribution on social networks, took photos and video filming, the third ones were engaged in the distribution of the budget and logistics - transport, food, etc., the 4th - invited volunteers, etc.

As part of the course, students wrote a grant for financial support and won $1,000. Another 1500 dollars was received in the form of a grant from CELAS, OSUN for the implementation of the project by a teacher. With this money, students, after consulting with specialists from the Ecopark and the National Academy of Sciences of the Kyrgyz Republic, purchased seedlings and bulbs in the Zherdev Garden and all the necessary tools for planting work (buckets, shovels, as well as gloves and garbage bags, since, in addition to planting trees and flowers, the students cleared part of the park from garbage).

At the same time, the students involved as volunteers about 50 schoolchildren from several metropolitan schools - No. 67 (children's movement "Young Patriot"), No. 12 and No. 29.

“We tried to get as many people as possible to help plant trees and tulips, and to raise awareness about the benefits of planting trees and caring for the environment,” students say.
