After a long pause, the printed copies of the university newspaper The New Star can be spotted around the campus again. Since the start of the pandemic, when the COVID-19 pandemic forced a temporary switch to online virtual study, The New Star ceased publishing in hardcopy but the paper continued to publish online. Now, as of September 2022, the newspaper is able to publish a print edition, which many students have welcomed warmly.
Officially, the American University of Central Asia first printed an independent student newspaper in October 1999, when it was named the AUK Student Newspaper; a month later, the second issue was published with the title The Star. In 2008, the newspaper was renamed The New Star. That year, the New Star won the Annual National Newspaper Prize for "Best Student Newspaper," awarded by the Journalism Association of Kyrgyzstan.
This is a newspaper for independent student writing in which important campus events, student success stories, and activities on and off campus are discussed. The New Star is not working for administration or to promote the university; rather, it gives students the opportunity to speak up about their ideas, issues, and desires. The main aim of this newspaper is to let students share their thoughts for a better community.
The New Star is created by a team of four people including the Editor-in-Chief, the Student Life officer, the co-editor, and the layout designer. At the beginning of every month, students receive a list of suggested topics, and they can offer their own topics too. After receiving confirmation, students are assigned individual deadlines and all articles are reviewed and shared with students if changes need to be applied. Moreover, the members of The New Star team have one or two guest lectures with professionals in writing from Journalism and Mass communication departments around the globe.
“I highly appreciate the bravery of our students who take part in our newspaper. My message to you is this: university life is not summarised in your classes and transcripts. You need to have extracurricular activities, because not only does this make your educational life fun, but also it has a huge impact on your further studies. If you would like to join the New Star as a writer, please remember that we are not expecting you to be a perfect writer, but we are here to let you challenge your talent and learn. Please feel free to ask questions by writing an e-mail to newstar@auca.kg .” - shares editor-in-chief Niloufar Rafat.
