A new sustainable community based project called “BUY NOTHING” at AUCA

April 15, 2022

Buy Nothing international project is a unique community-led initiative that is all about sharing and using resources using principle of redistributive justice. The project invites AUCA entire community to support and gift items which we no longer need and receive items that we want.

You are invited to gift any number of items from your household that you no longer need and will be happy if they get a new creative cycle of life (upcycling so to speak). You can leave your items (undamaged, cleaned and in good condition) in room 315 – there are designated boxes in this faculty room. When you deposit your items into the boxes do not forget to write your full name, department and position (student, faculty or staff). We will be receiving items from the 14th of April till the 25th of April, we will be keeping an inventory and records who brought what. And the nicest part is that on the 29th of April we shall have a Big Give event where all those who gifted can come to the Forum and pick an equivalent number of new items that they can bring home and which they need.  So, if you gifted five items you can receive five items on the day. All the logistics will be organized by the students who help out with launch of the project at AUCA. Cheers to them.

The Project Aim

The project aims to popularize and spread the practices of upcycling in the Bishkek community. This is one of the sustainable (eco-friendly) behaviors that reduces the rates of consumption and rubbish accumulation, thus helps with alleviating problem of environmental degradation and pollution. The project also fits in the realm of gift economy where people in need can receive objects for free.

The project milestones:

  1. Bring items in appropriate condition for someone else to use it from your households and leave them in room 315 (Faculty room) in the designated boxes from the 14-25th April
  2. On the 29th of April come to the AUCA Forum and get your gifts if you gifted
  3. We will do filming on the day and you can express your reactions to the project
  4. Items which were not chosen will be given to community partners that will redistribute the items (Association of Children from Orphanage Houses and the League for the Child Protection Rights)

Your contribution and active participation in the project will be highly appreciated. Please spread the word and encourage your friends/colleagues to participate. We sincerely hope that every member of the AUCA community will be open to new types of pro-environmental initiatives and behaviors happening on campus.  Every little counts.

Please watch a video which we produced as a community appeal to action.
