On March 28-30, 2022, Acting Public Affairs Officer of the U.S. Embassy in Kabul Erik Black and Chief for Afghanistan and Pakistan Grants and Programs Vitessa Del Prete visited the American University of Central Asia (AUCA) and met with more than 200 students from Afghanistan, including many who are supported by Public Affairs Section (PAS) U.S. Embassy in Kabul scholarship program.
PAS Scholarship recipients receive the unique opportunity for a higher education degree at AUCA on a fully funded 5-year program that includes the preparatory program New Generation Academy (NGA) and Undergraduate classes with the goal of raising future Afghan leaders.
PAS representatives were impressed with the diverse and engaging living and learning environment AUCA provides to host international students, including many from Afghanistan. Their meetings with students were a particularly exciting part of this visit.
“The thing I like the most at AUCA is the opportunity to study at the NGA and strengthen my English language skills before applying for undergraduate programs, since we have different levels of language,” said Hawa Taban, one of the scholarship recipients.
During several meetings with students and AUCA leadership, the scholarship terms and incredible achievements of the Afghan students implementing social projects to develop the community and bring positive changes were discussed. Additionally, Erik Black gave a large presentation about the U.S. Refugee Admission Program (USRAP) an opportunity for refugee resettlement of Afghan students and eligible family members to the United States.
