Promoting Dialogue: Russian and Central Asian Youth Leaders

     The media camp Promoting Dialogue between Russian and Central Asian Youth Leaders aimed at raising capacity of young leaders from five Central Asian states (Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan and Tajikistan) and Russian Federation. Implementing partner of this camp was American University of Central Asia, which helped in attracting students from following countries.

       The media camp was held on August 17 – 30 in Kyrgyzstan. The participants spent 2 days in Bishkek city and 12 days at the Issyk-Kul Lake. The project contributed to the promotion of effective dialogue among young leaders from six countries through the 12-day media camp with interactive theoretical and practical workshops for better understanding of developments in and between the Central Asian states and Russian Federation. One of the main project’s objectives of the media camp was to improve coverage in-between six countries as well as to boost more informed and responsible discussion of issues related to the relationships of the involved states building tolerance and promoting mutual understanding.  

      The project provided young leaders from six countries with skills for better performance in producing and effective use of different kinds of media.  The media camp consisted of daily interactive theoretical and practical workshops with open discussions of existing problems to increase the level of understanding of tolerance, intercultural communications, and consequences of nationalism itself among the participants.

      The project equipped the participants with knowledge in intercultural communications, stereotypes, critical approach to media, development communications. It also built media production skills including print, video, photography and new media tools.

     The media camp provided a diversified trainers’ team. The trainers from Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Russian Federation and Great Britain came to the media camp to deliver guest lectures and trainings within the media camp curriculum.

         Different media courses were implemented, and in the end of the camp participators presented their final projects.
