September 16, a guest lecture at the AUCA by Mr. Rajendra Shende, Policy Advisor at United Nations

September 15, 2016

Tian Shan Policy Center kindly invites all interested to a guest lecture by Mr. Rajendra Shende, Policy Advisor at United Nations on implementation of activities related to ozone layer protection and climate change in more than 146 developing countries. Rajendra Shende is expert on transfer of environmentally sound technologies and the implementation of the Multilateral Environmental Agreements (MEAs) in the developing countries and countries with economies in transition.

The lecture will be held on September 16, 2016 at 15.00 in room 434.

Abstract:

For nearly 30 years, the nations of the world have been striving to reverse the depletion of the ozone layer, benefiting millions of people from all walks of life. While much has been accomplished, much remains to be done. The world is working together, through the United Nations, to mitigate the threat of climate change, just as they have done successfully for the ozone layer.

Their success in phasing out ozone-depleting substances has inspired a new effort to reduce hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs). These replace many of the chemicals controlled under the Montreal Protocol, but are strong global warming gases and their rapidly increasing emissions threaten to offset the climate benefits already achieved under the Montreal Protocol.

That is why the parties to the Montreal Protocol are working to address HFCs this year, with a move expected to avoid emissions of up to 105 gigatonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent by 2050 and up to 0.4°C of global warming by the end of this century. What’s more, for some applications, replacing HFCs with climate-friendly refrigerants and technologies can improve energy efficiency by up to 50%, which can significantly reduce energy costs for consumers and businesses.

Biography:

Rajendra Madhavrao Shende, an alumnus of Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) and former Director in United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), is currently serving as the Chairman of TERRE Policy Centre which is a not-for-profit organization engaged in the evidence-based policy development and project based advocacy on the sustainable development.

Mr. Rajendra Shende served as Review Editor for the IPCC Special report on Technology Transfer in 2000 and was a Coordinating Lead Author for the IPCC/TEAP special report on Safeguarding the Ozone layer and Global Climate System in 2005. The work of the IPCC, including the contributions of many scientists, was recognised by the joint award of the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize.

He is a member steering committee of key UNEP reports on interlinkages between Ozone Layer Protection and climate change. He has adopted his village Rahimatpur to develop it into a role model and a Social Laboratory for the sustainable development.
