AUCA held its first MUN conference

June 7, 2016

On June 1, 2016, the American University of Central Asia (AUCA), in collaboration with Bard College, held its first Model United Nations (MUN) conference in Bishkek. The conference was targeted towards both local and some international high school students.

Students from Bishkek’s local high schools were invited to participate in AUCA’s first Model United Nations high school program. Throughout the day-long program, students engaged with major political and economical issues faced by the international community. AUCA’s Model UN program consisted of three committees, two of which were held in English and one in Russian.

Model United Nations is a student-directed academic simulation of the United Nations. Students come together to learn how these assemblies function and to work with people who have the potential to become leaders of change for the next generation. Participants represent a country of their choice, taking on the role of its diplomat. Students then work on pressing issues of the day, requiring them to engage with the political, social, economic and environmental concerns of the world. Model UN is a great opportunity for students to improve their debate skills, critical thinking, and teamwork. In addition, Model UN exposes students to international relations and dramatically increases their competency in problem solving, conflict resolution, research, and communication, all through the diplomatic processes used by the UN.
