March 2 and 3, 2016, two representatives from the U.S. Department of State in Kabul, Grants Program Specialist Lynn Walroth and Cultural Affairs Assistant Janet Thompson, visited AUCA. The goal of their visit was to checkup on existing policies and discuss ideas for the future of the partnership.

The guests were welcomed by a group of AUCA administration as well as faculty and staff from the undergraduate departments and the New Generation Academy (NGA). Walroth and Thompson met scholarship recipients from Afghanistan and were shown around the campus and the dorms.  The representatives were able to see cultural and entertainment programs, a few student clubs, and other extracurricular performances.

On the first day, the embassy representatives had a small campus tour during which they were familiarized with the AUCA’s facilities and educational process. AUCA President Andrew Wachtel, joined by the Afghan Students’ and University Grants’ Coordinators, discussed with the representatives the implementation of new programs, an overview of the current program, and ideas for improving the existing scholarship program.

On the second day, the guests met with professors and the division heads to discuss the academic achievements of the embassy scholarship recipients. Walroth and Thompson took a tour of the dormitory, paying particular attention to the afghan students’ lifestyles in university housing. The representatives held a meeting with undergraduates and NGA students for the students to express their ideas and concerns about the educational and social environment at AUCA.

The American University of Central Asia looks forward to continuing cooperation with the US Embassy in Kabul, and expects to welcome a new cohort of scholarship recipients from Afghanistan in the 2016-2017 academic year.
