Editor-in-chief of AUCA Magazine spent a week in Osh

January 27, 2016

Marcos Cisneros, the current editor-in-chief of AUCA Magazine and a PR specialist in AUCA’s communications department, spent a week in Osh Kyrgyzstan teaching “A Brief History of American Pop Culture,” a series of seminars at the Osh Pedagogical Institute for the Humanities (OGPI). The course focused on the immigrant roots of typical “American” foods, music, and films and encouraged the students to engage in comparative discussions in English about cultures in the Kyrgyz Republic and the United States. Over thirty students from the institute attended Cisneros’s course.

“The experience was, on the whole, very fun and educational. At least for me—I hope for the students, too!” commented Cisneros commented in an interview. “Although it was a bit of a challenge for me to teach to a group with such a diversity of English ability, it was encouraging to see students helping each other with the material. In that sense, they really connected with the seminar-style.”

Both Cisneros and OGPI have expressed interest in continuing the teaching arrangement beyond the week-long engagement. They have been planning to conduct another seminar in the Summer of 2016.
