Diversity Week 2016

Diversity Week 2016

January 26, 2016

On January 26th, 2016, Diversity Week began at the American University of Central Asia. Sixteen delegations are represented in this year.

Representatives from a few delegations shared their thoughts and impressions about the first day and the days leading up to it.

Meerim Nurkanova, from the Italian Delegation and an ICP student, said, “Aman is the leader of our delegation; he offered to create the Italian Delegation, because it hasn’t been represented before. Many students were surprised to hear that an Italian Delegation was created. We, our friends and families, have brought all of these souvenirs from Italy over the past couple of years. There are twenty members in our delegation. We have divided ourselves into groups, with each group responsible for their own day. We hope everything will be fine—at least we’ll try.”

Meerim Isaeva, a JMC student part of the Jamaican Delegation, said, “we created the Jamaican Delegation because we wished to show something bright and explosive. Aigerim Asankulova is the founder of this delegation; she is an MDA dance instructor, so she has been choreographing our dances. There are ten members in our delegation, and we only have one guy in our group. We’ll try to wow people with our beautiful and fiery dance at the final performance.”

Mustafa Shirzad, an Economics student from the Afghani Delegation, said, “the first day of Diversity Week is one of its most impressive days because every delegation introduces its culture, traditions, souvenirs, and costumes. This is a great chance to get closer to other cultures. This year, our Afghani Delegation prepared a lot of new materials.”

Chynara Bakyt kyzy, from the Unity of Diversity Delegation and ICP, said, “the idea to create the Unity of Diversity delegation arose when I and Gera were sitting in a politics class together. We think that the core idea of Diversity Week is to be against discrimination and for unity through diversity. We decided to remind people what Diversity Week actually means. That is why we started the Unity of Diversity Delegation. It promotes unity, diversity, peace, love, and friendship without borders. Despite the fact that we all come from different cultures and histories, we live with the same values. Our delegation consists of thirty members. We built up our group quite simply – through Facebook. Surprisingly, we are a very international delegation. We are going to wow people with an interesting video that promotes the ideas of globalization. Also, we have strongest dance routine for final day, and we hope everyone enjoys it.”

Ravshan Yusufov, a member of the Tajik Delegation and a student in the Psychology Department, said, “we’ve brought a number of national musical instruments like tablak, dutor, and other national objects like women’s jewelry. This year we'll be presenting an interesting video. There are twenty members of our delegation. Preparing for our performance, we have been full of energy and nobody has been late, so our performance should be very interesting!”
