AUCA student attended Open Data Science Conference

December 11, 2015

Bard exchange student from AUCA Daria Kim attended the Open Data Science Conference (ODSC) West on November 13-15 in San Francisco. She was chosen as one of the most outstanding students from the Bard College Computer Science program. The group was lead by Professor Robert McGrail, who was a visiting professor from Bard College at AUCA in the fall of 2013.

Data Science is emerging as one of the most popular academic disciplines and new professions today. Even though the discipline is new, there are more and more schools that offer degrees in Data Science. Well-qualified specialists have always been scarce, but demand for them has been increased dramatically. What is interesting about Data Science is that it can be applied to any sphere of knowledge, providing one with skills to collect, analyze, and present data on any topic.

Four outstanding students from the Bard College Computer Science program Alexandra Morris, Daria Kim, Morgan Evans, and Stefan Stojanov under the guidance of Professor Robert McGrail attended the Open Data Science Conference (OSCD) West on November 13-15 in San Francisco. The ODSC is a perfect place to learn new discoveries and trends in data science software and topics. More specifically, by attending the conference students had a chance to gain first-hand experience from the experts and professionals. They worked in collaboration with fellow conference delegates sharing their own ideas. Through the talks and networking sessions attendees, speakers, and sponsors gained quality knowledge and valuable experience during the two-day conference. The ODSC is an event where one can meet his or her future employer or business partner. It offers a specifically designated interview room for this purpose. Another asset of the conference is its range of opportunities it offers to data-driven individuals, companies, and startups. It provides knowledge and connections that will help to launch various science projects.

During the conference, Bard students had a chance to build professional networks with fellow delegates and work together on various projects. It is important to mention that one of the Bard students, Daria Kim is an exchange student from the American University of Central Asia in Kyrgyzstan.

Daria shares her impression on San Francisco and the conference:

“San Francisco is incredibly beautiful. I immediately fell in love with this city because it has a lot of wonderful points of interest. It is interesting that San Francisco is stunning both at night and in the morning. Everyone would be amazed by this city’s beauty. Narrow streets that almost meet the sky, breathtaking views of the ocean, the Golden Gate Bridge, a lot of sea gulls, the famous Alcatraz prison, red tramways, and delicious food are the main attractions of San Francisco that make people return to this city again and again.

First of all, I want to thank my professor, Robert McGrail for providing me with such a wonderful opportunity to attend the conference. The conference totally amazed me. Throughout my life I have attended many conferences, but the Open Data Science Conference impressed so much me because it was very well-organized and structured. During the conference I gained new knowledge and broadened my horizons. The ultimate goal of it was to introduce new devices and tools, make people familiar with them, and teach people how to use them through various workshops. After participating in the ODSC conference, I have a clear idea for my senior project. It was a very inspirational experience.”
