Day of the Culture for NGA students

On November 29, 2015, New Generation Academy (NGA) administration and alumni arranged a “Day of the Culture” for NGA students. NGA students enrolled in the 2015-2016 academic year visited the Kyrgyz State Museum of History with faculty and some alumni.

The event started off with a welcome address to the students at Oak Park, opposite of AUCA’s old campus. NGA Alumni shared their experiences at NGA with current students. Afterwards, the students participated in outdoor games put on by volunteers from the Young Life 2.0 Club.

NGA administrative assistant, Ümüt Kyrdyrgychova noted, “The students enjoyed everything; they were happy. After our group was felt fully energized, we went to the museum. We divided into two groups in the museum. For the next two hours we listened to professional guides share their knowledge about the history of Kyrgyzstan. After the tour, we played a trivia game, asking various questions about the history of Kyrgyzstan. Students received small prizes decorated with Kyrgyz national ornaments: key rings, magnets, maps of Kyrgyzstan, t-shirts, caps, and many others.”

“Kyrgyzstan has large and well-decorated museum. The archaeological exhibitions tell us the history of Kyrgyzstan. On the first floor, there are exhibitions. On the second floor of the museum, there are a collection of artifacts from the socialist revolution, which was in Moscow in 1917. You can find documents, photographs, and biographies of the leaders of the revolution. Finally, there was a yurt, costumes, books, pictures, dishes, stones, jewelry, and many other things on the third floor of museum,” said NGA student, Marzia Farasoo.

“We were given a complete tour of the whole museum. After the tour, there was a nice trivia session about Kyrgyzstani history with prizes. Those who were able to answer the questions, like me, were given prizes. In short, I found this excursion very important. It was an incredible opportunity to bond with each other, while also having fun and learning about Kyrgyzstan. Special thanks to the Young live club for initiating this event,” Ashraf Saad, NGA 2015-2016 student said.

“As a foreigner, I have always wanted to explore the history and culture of Kyrgyzstan. Our excursion to Kyrgyzstan’s national museum was very interesting for me. Everything was placed in an order that made it more understandable to newcomers and foreigners. I liked the Kyrgyz national dress and Yurt, traditional Kyrgyz houses. Yurts are designed in a quite simple and beautiful way. Also, there was statue of a woman weaving a carpet and, close to her, there were different shapes of carpets reflecting the tradition of carpet-weaving. It grabbed my attention and gave me the sense of being in Kyrgyzstan of 50 years ago. The most considerable thing I found out yesterday was that the statues, jewelries and history of Kyrgyzstan and Afghanistan are quite similar. I even saw some Farsi poems written in the museum about history and it made me feel happy that once, the whole of Central Asia was united and called as one area,” - Mursal Zuhair, NGA 2015- 2016 student said.

“Visiting the museum was a wonderful experience. Not only did I learn about the historic evolutions that have taken place in Kyrgyzstan in the past, but I also thoroughly enjoyed seeing all the primitive tools and items the Kyrgyz people have used over the course of their existence. All of my Afghan classmates were taken aback by the historic photographs showing the early culture of the Kyrgyz people,” -  Farhad Shayan, Afghan student, studying at AUCA, says.

The New Generation Academy is a preparatory program within AUCA. Students from the Kyrgyz Republic, Afghanistan, Turkey, Russian Federation, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Kazakhstan and many other countries are currently enrolled in this program.
