Applications Open for Mary Schweitzer Scholarship

Applications Open for Mary Schweitzer Scholarship

September 22, 2015

Gulmira Aldakeeva graduated from the AUCA department of anthropology in 2005, and then received her MA in anthropology from the University of Bayreuth, Germany. She and the rest of the AUCA anthropology class of 2005 established the Mary Schweitzer Scholarship Committee. The scholarship helps fund the education of one or two outstanding students from the anthropology department.

The Mary Schweitzer Scholarship was an initiative of the anthropology department’s class of 2005. It was established in 2010 and started funding students the same year. The scholarship was founded to support outstanding students studying anthropology at AUCA.

Gulmira told us about the Mary Schweitzer Scholarship history, selection process, and goals.

“Dr. Mary Schweitzer worked at AUCA in the anthropology department from 2002-2003 and 2004-2005. She taught us anthropology and inspired us to love it. We were ten girls in the group and almost all the girls continued their education in or around the field of anthropology. So as a thank you for the contribution she made to our education, we wanted to name the scholarship in Dr. Mary Schweitzer’s honor.

The Mary Schweitzer Scholarship committee gives financial support to students from the region, whose families demonstrate financial need. All anthropology students starting from sophomore year can apply to the scholarship. The specific number and amount of awards depends on the funding available for that year. Since the beginning of the scholarship, we have awarded eleven anthropology students a total of $7,530.

We look for high-achieving and well-rounded students at AUCA. We pay special attention to students who take on active roles in their extracurricular activities. We are also interested in students who show interest in anthropological field research and who are willing to apply their knowledge in solving problems in the world.

Through the help of Dr. Mary Schweitzer, anthropology alumni, and many friends, we have already raised enough money for this year’s scholars, so we are looking forward to our newest class of applicants.”
