AUCA Student Senate: Azat Baatyrbekov

AUCA Student Senate: Azat Baatyrbekov

September 15, 2014

 1. What is involved in your role as Chairman of the Student Senate?

Firstly, the role was working with students to resolve problems raised by them. Second, to protect their interest and rights, as well as being a bridge between administration and students.

2. How has your experience been overall?

I was working for student Senate in two terms, and these two years working in student government was some of the best moments in my university life. Firstly, I get acquainted with lots of students, administration stuff, and with the dean of students working with the student Senate, which means that you become well aware with the system and structure of your university. Moreover, on the behalf of our university, I participated in the annual conference of Student Senators, which took place in the American University of Bulgaria. Delegations from American universities from all around the world attended the conference; where each made a presentation about their university.  In terms of acquiring personal experience, I have seen the work of other student committees, met interesting people, and learned a lot of useful information.

3. How was the campaigning?

My campaigning was very funny and was made by my friends. There were different funny words written in the papers and hung on the walls of the university.

4. What are some of the events that were organized and run during your time on the Student Senate?

Generally speaking, most of the events are organized or at least financed by student Senate.  Additionally, there were events like, “Street ball”, “Arm wrestling”, and “Strongest man of AUCA”.

5. With elections and campaigning starting in about a month, why should students be interested in running for Senate?

I would suggest running for the student Senate to sophomores and juniors. Because, they have become more mature as well and familiar with the university and it will be easier for them to work as a student and at the same time to study. Why should students be interested?  “Experience is a great science”, working in Senate, at minimum students will get experience working in a team, interacting with people, to speak in front of the people and etc. Moreover, while I was in Bulgaria, I have seen the practice of other universities in that; they have an online Student Senate election system. I really got interested in this way of conducting elections because this will help us to avoid misunderstandings that may arise during/after elections by increasing the transparency. So, in the upcoming elections, the AUCA Student Senate will try to use online elections for choosing the senators of AUCA.
