JMC Week: Interview with Evgenia Tsoy

JMC Week: Interview with Evgenia Tsoy

October 28, 2013

- You are a student in the Journalism Department.  Why did you choose AUCA, and why

did you enroll as a JMC major?

Upon graduation from high school I had no hesitation about which college to choose - I picked AUCA, even though my Gold Certificate granted me free education at any other school in the country.

Now, three years later, I do not doubt my decision even a bit. I have met great people here, both among teaching staff and diverse student community. I became part of a bigger family that helps me grow intellectually and develop professionally.

- Tell us a little about your department. What new things did you learn there?

It is hard to list all the things I have learned at AUCA; there are just too many! It is not only about academic advancement, but also about the practical skills necessary for communications majors.

Another amazing thing about JMC department is that we have great facilities: a few specialized labs with editing software, photo- and video-equipment, powerful laptops, and a studio. Experimenting is the best way to learn.

- Which sphere of journalism would you like to specialize in? Why?

I am really into Public Relations now. This profession is popular all over the world, including in Kyrgyzstan. The importance of communications cannot be overestimated, and that is why PR is in demand and attracts the most exciting people.

I like PR because right now it is aligned with my passion and interests.

-Tell us about your favorite class in the department. What is interesting about it?

It is hard to pick only one favorite class. The department set up a whole bunch of fascinating courses, all of which gave me knowledge and enjoyment.

I appreciated the news writing classes that introduced me to journalism and taught me to think critically. I enjoyed studying communications, the core of Public Relations. I found very useful the classes on video and editing, as they boosted my creativity and imagination.

-As a senior student, you have to make your honor thesis project. Did you start working on your project? What is it about?

That is right, currently I am working on my senior thesis which examines Public Relations in Kyrgyzstan. Under the mentorship of an experienced professional, I plan to make a worthwhile project, which will not only contribute to my personal growth and help me understand professional peculiarities better, but also contribute to the overall development of Public Relations in the country.

The short answer is no, I have not started.

-You were a participant of the Bard exchange program and studied at Bard for one semester. Tell us a little about that experience.

Studying at a true liberal arts institution was inspiring. Bard College positions itself as “a place to think”, and it definitely matches up its motto. I wish every single student at AUCA was given a chance to experience the special atmosphere and learning environment of Bard College first-hand, because it is hard to transmit through the words.

- What advice would you give to students who want to study in the JMC Department?

I would suggest students to take everything the JMC department has to offer, which is quite a lot. Network, communicate, and make friends, because the folks you study with are going to be the future leaders of media sphere in the country!
