November 8, 2012

On November 8, 2012, American University of Central Asia law faculty, Elida Nogoibaeva, Kamila Mateeva, and Michelle Leighton, together with U.S. Fulbright Association President, Ruslan Myrzalimov, presented 75 copies of the  the "Contemporary International Law - Materials and Cases" resource book to the Kyrgyz State Law Academy. The United States Embassy Public Affairs Officer, Guljan Tolbaeva, was also present and thanked for the Embassy’s support that made publication of the book possible.  The working group made a presentation about the book and the two year project.  The project's objective is support of legal education among the faculty and students of universities and law schools in Kyrgyzstan.

The book had been developed and published by the faculty members and students of the three higher educational establishments of Kyrgyzstan - the American University of Central Asia, the Kyrgyz State Law Academy and the Kyrgyz National University.

Making her speech at the presentation, First Vice Rector for Academic Work and Innovative Development of the KSLA Irina Dmitrienko expressed her hope that this book would become a good aid in generating new scientific research work. '"When the work on the book just began, there were lots of all sorts of discussions and the project was undoubtedly an interesting one. I wish for you to never stop at what you have already achieved" - noted Dmitrienko.

Michelle Leighton, Associate Professor of Law at AUCA and Deputy Director of the Tian Shan Policy Center/AUCA, described the book and its contents, emphasizing thatthe book is not a textbook, but it is a teaching resource. Teachers can use the material from the book to complement their own courses in international relations, governance, business, human rights, and other subjects of law. It can be used by lawyers and policy makers alike, as a viable resource for those who work on international issues. She noted that the Law Academy students were among contributors to the book.

Also, the audience was informed that the book would be soon translated into Kyrgyz with additional support of the U.S. Embassy. There are plans to distribute this resource book in all the regions of the Republic.

The Law Academy received the 75 copies of the "Contemporary International Law" and thanked the working group, AUCA, and Fulbright Association for the gift.  After presentation of the books, the group engaged in a further discussion with faculty and students of the Kyrgyz Academy of Law on the various chapters of the book and how it can be best used in their classes.
