First CEUS-AUCA Workshop

Locating Central Asia Within Eurasia

Bishkek, 3-4 July 2017

Organized by the Central Asian Studies Institute

Within the framework of this first workshop we would like to locate Central Asia within Eurasia (including Europe) and within South Asia (including Afghanistan and the Indian subcontinent.) We suggest doing it by initiating a pluridisciplinary dialogue on two levels. Based on the workshop's participants personal experience we can, firstly, select some of the social, cultural, political, or economic processes taking place in Central Asia in the past and in the present, and dwell on their connectedness or lack thereof to the broader Eurasian context. Secondly, we can reflect on what kind of theoretical and empirical knowledge about or related to these processes has been produced in the US and in Kyrgyzstan. We can thus, hopefully, identifying research topics that are relevant to the ongoing transformation in Central Asia and, at the same time, map out a mutually beneficial cooperation between CEUS and AUCA in addressing them.
