Kyrgyz President signs new law on Kyrgyz Language

July 23, 2013

The national strategy for sustainable development of the Kyrgyz Republic for 2013-2017 sets to carry out a more effective language policy.

The language policy supports the idea of the Kyrgyz nation, and will promote Kyrgyz language over other minority languages such as Russian and Uzbek. The government expects the next generation to speak fluent Kyrgyz despite their ethnic background, and are prepared to delegate the resources, especially to minority communities, to make this a reality. Russian will remain an official language.

A working group to improve language policy and implementation was created, and includes AUCA professor Gulmira Duisheeva.
