Tajikistan, Uzbekistan popular among emigrating Russians

Tashkent, Dushanbe rank among popular places for work-weary Russians to go

Thursday, July 05, 2012 - Russians who want to leave their homeland for a slower pace of life are heading to Tajikistan and Uzbekistan, a Voice of Russia report on Thursday said.

Russian citizens are also finding haven from the hectic pace of life by heading to Georgia, as well as to Asia, Africa, and Latin America.

Termed ‘downshifters,’ these Russians are unhappy in a life that allows for little leisure time and little opportunity to travel, and number several thousands. Those falling into this group are more than happy to lower their standards of living to pursue new experiences and work situations abroad.

Most of those in this category are recent college graduates, Voice of Russia noted.

Uzbekistan, though expensive for citizens faced with low job prospects, is significantly less expensive than is Moscow, while Tajikistan consistently ranks among the Commonwealth of Independent States’ poorest nation.
