Zanré Reed is a  full-time lecturer, interdisciplinary multi-platform storyteller, and documentary filmmaker from Cape Town, South Africa.

He holds an MFA in Documentary Film Directing from DocNomads and remotely teaches Documentary Film Directing, Radio & Podcast Production, and Photography Creativity at the University of Central Asia in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan.

With an interest in creative nonfiction, that deals primarily with memory, childhood, and family narrative, he is particularly interested in films and audio documentaries that transform personal histories into public installations that manage to say something about the human experience.

Since having studied and practiced across a range of media, he brings an interdisciplinary, eclectic approach to his classes, integrating references from poetry, photography, painting, film, philosophy, and technical expertise across multiple platforms.

  • 2013 Short fiction film “Gloves” won “Best Film” at ATKV Film Fundi competion. It was then invited to screen at the Silverskerm Festival in Camps  Bay, Cape Town.
  • 2013 National MTN Radio Award for “Best Weekend Show of the Year.” 2013 Golden Key Honors award for academic excellence.
  • 2016 - 2018  Erasmus Mundus European scholarship for post-graduate studies.
  • 2017 Best unique documentary concept at Cinema Chemistry workshop at Filmer à tout Prix festival in Brussels, Belgium.
  • 2019  Documentary “Ek Blom” screening at Viewfinder Documentary Film Festival in Ghent, Belgium and at Queer Lisboa in Lisbon, Portugal.

2019 - 2022 Documentary “Ouma Hen”.

My camera documents my grandmother’s chores, her love for chickens, her grow-
ing clientele and quietly becomes the catalyst for her to speak about the past.

2023 The Bishkek Diaries Podcast Project.

In search of vibes, stories, and experiences, we take our microphones into our
private worlds and share experiences, reflections, and personal sounds on tape
while living in the capital city of Kyrgyzstan.
From stories about losing things, to feeling alone in a foreign city, this podcast
explores universal themes that connect all of us in Bishkek.
