CA 503 Introduction to Central Asian Studies
Svetlana Jacquesson, PhD, Anthropology
Why study “Central Asia”? What “Central Asian Studies” are, or have been, how and why? Based on the simultaneous presentation of Central Asia as a cultural area and of the various traditions of knowledge production on this area, the course will help students develop critical thinking on Central Asia, on its changing frontiers, on the internal diversity and dynamics of the area as well as on its varying ways of interacting with outsiders in the past and present. The course will also provide an introduction to the knowledge systems which have shaped and are shaping different and sometimes conflicting perceptions of Central Asia and it will focus more particularly on the complex relations between academic disciplines of various kinds, area studies and cultural studies.
