CA 500 Introduction to Area Studies
Svetlana Jacquesson, PhD, Anthropology
This course privides an overview of area studies, from both institutional and epistemological perspectives. Starting with the birth of area studies in the post-War period, the course traces their development up to the present. A special attention is paid to the changing relations between area studies and academic disciplines, to scholarly critiques and defences of the kind of knowledge produced by area specialists and to recent debates on pluridisciplinarity and transdisciplinarity. The course allows students to better understand the specificity of a Master of Arts program in area studies and helps them link together the various core field courses offered by the program.
