WHAT IS JOURNALISM AND MASS COMMUNICATIONS?

Journalism and Mass Communications is the practice of investigation and reporting of events, issues, and trends to a broad audience. While journalism focuses on the written product (e.g. news­paper articles), mass communications involve a broad range of publications from writing to broadcasting.

 

ABOUT US

The AUCA Journalism and Mass Communication Department has been training and educating competent media professionals since 1997. The Program’s graduates have proved their professionalism working as reporters, staff writers, editors, public relations and communications specialists. They succeed in many organizations such as NTS TV, NBT TV, Pyramida TV, 5 Kanal, Raketa TV, Vecherny Bishkek daily, Internews, Helvetas, Swiss cooperation in Central Asia, Associated Press, Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty, international organizations such as Soros Foundation, Eurasia Foundation and the like. A number of JMC graduates continued their studies in leading American and European universities and some of them returned to their alma mater to teach in the department.

In June 2012, the Journalism and Mass Communications Department received a five-year license to prepare specialists in journalism and mass communications field.  The Journalism and Mass Communications Program has also been accepted to receive accreditation with Bard College (USA). It created an opportunity for the students to obtain a US-accredited degree and make their education more competitive, not only in Central Asian market but in the global one as well.

 

Currently the Journalism and Mass Communications Program offers courses in such high-demand areas as public relations, advertising, mass culture and media/communication studies.

 

In 2012 Journalism and Mass Communications Department has received a technical grant from American Schools & Hospitals Abroad Program of the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) consisting of new Mac workstations, HP workstations, MacBooks as well as professional Canon photo cameras and professional video cameras JVC. In fall 2012 Journalism and Mass Communications Department has established a new multimedia center with all equipment available for students of Journalism and Mass Communications Program to master techniques of producing video and audio.

 

YOUR POSSIBILITIES

 

The department is committed to teaching students the skills and the tools of journalism and mass communications field to meet the highest standards of the industry.

 

The Program helps students develop abilities to think critically, to communicate clearly, to understand the ethical dimensions of the decisions they make, and to fully recognize the role of media in a free society.

 

JMC offers students facilities and resources to develop hands-on journalistic skills along with their regular course work. The students benefit from AUCA TV where they develop and hone their reporting skills. They also practice writing and producing the student newspaper The New Star. Others gain experience through hands-on practice at the AUCA Public Relations Office. Some students contribute to production of the Alumni Magazine. The new multimedia center with modern equipment is open for all students of the department to master their skills in photo, video and audio. The Program will continue streamlining its structure and content in the upcoming years to keep up with rapidly changing media in the Central Asian region and the world.

 

JMC works closely with different media outlets, organizing regular student meetings with media and PR professionals and providing tours to professional news facilities.  The intent is to help students understand the conditions local journalists work in today and the news generation process. Such meetings also help students identify job opportunities and get work placement and internships.
