USAID Releases 15th Edition of NGO Sustainability Index

USAID Releases 15th Edition of NGO Sustainability Index for Central and Eastern Europe and Eurasia

USAID Kyrgyzstan and the American University of Central Asia in Bishkek hosted a presentation of the 2011 CSO Sustainability Index for Kyrgyzstan and a discussion of implications for the future of civil society in Kyrgyzstan.

The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) released the 15th edition of its Non-Governmental Sustainability Index, now called the Civil Society Organization Sustainability Index (CSOSI) in recognition of the broad range of non-profit civil society organizations (CSOs) active in the region.  Celebrating its 15th year as a valuable analytical research tool, the CSOSI has been transformed dramatically since its inception, and has expanded its coverage from 21 countries in the Europe and Eurasia Region to more than 60 countries in different regions around the world.

The American University of Central Asia is USAID Kyrgyzstan’s partner for the 2011 Civil Society Organization Sustainability Index for Kyrgyzstan.  Covering civil society developments during calendar year 2011, the index examines the overall environment for civil society, focusing on the legal climate, organizational capacity, financial viability, advocacy, service provision, infrastructure, and public image.

The 2011 index reports a number of changes over previous years in governance in Kyrgyzstan, suggesting that 2011 was a significant year for democracy in Kyrgyzstan. The index shows that over the past year, civil society experienced greater influence in governance processes.
